Leadership Courses
CHP leadership courses are for swimmers ages 12 and up who are interested in increasing lifesaving and first aid skills as well as swimming proficiency. Not all levels will be available each term, please check our brochure for up to date information regarding course availability.
Bronze Star with Fundamental Workplace First Aid
The Bronze Star and Fundamental workplace first aid develops candidates swimming proficiency, and teaches basic lifesaving skills. This program helps candidates prepare for Bronze Medallion.
Bronze Medallion with Basic Workplace First Aid
The Bronze Medallion and basic workplace first aid teaches candidates the four lifesaving principles which are judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. This program is designed to challenge the candidate physically by improving stroke efficiency and endurance and mentally by learning to respond to complex first aid situations.
Prerequisites: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification.
Bronze Cross with Intermediate Workplace First Aid
The Bronze Cross and Intermediate workplace first aid prepares candidates to become a lifeguard by strengthening the four lifesaving principles which are judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Bronze Cross certification is a prerequisite for becoming an assistant lifeguard, Swim for life instructor or taking the National Lifeguard course. This program teaches candidates aquatic emergency prevention and improves lifesaving skills.
Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and basic workplace first aid
National Lifeguard
The National Lifeguard and airway management course prepares candidates to successfully respond to and prevent emergencies in the aquatic setting. This course develops the skills and first aid knowledge learned in the Bronze programs. Successful completion of this course allows candidates to work as a certified lifeguard in a pool.
Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, intermediate workplace first aid and 15 years old by the end of the course.
Swim for Life
The swim for life course teaches candidates how to properly safely instruct and evaluate students in swim strokes and beginner lifesaving skills. During this program candidates are taught different teaching strategies, correction techniques and specific drills tailored to each skill. After successful completion of this course candidates will be qualified to teach swimmers of all ages.
Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, intermediate workplace first aid and 15 years old by the end of the course.
Lifesaving Instructor / First Aid Instructor
The Lifesaving Instructor/First Aid Instructor course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving and first aid skills and resuscitation techniques in the Society’s lifesaving and first aid awards.
National Lifeguard Instructor
National Lifeguard Instructor The National Lifeguard Instructor course provides candidates with an understanding of the principles and practices on which the National Lifeguard program is based. The course explores teaching approaches and techniques appropriate for National Lifeguard candidates. After successful completion of the course, National Lifeguard Instructors are certified to teach the National Lifeguard course in the option(s) they hold (i.e., National Lifeguard Instructors who hold National Lifeguard Pool may teach National Lifeguard Pool, etc.).
Prerequisites: National Lifeguard (any option) and Lifesaving Instructor certifications (need not be current).
Examiner
The Examiner course prepares the instructor to evaluate lifesaving skills. Candidates learn to evaluate participants in Bronze Medal awards, Lifesaving Fitness, Basic first aid. Candidates learn to evaluate to the First Aid award level that they themselves hold.
Trainer
The Trainer course is the first step in the three-step process to be appointed as a Trainer for the Society. The course provides candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach instructors, and prepares participants to successfully apprentice as a Trainer on the Instructor course(s) of their choice. It shapes positive attitudes and values about the Society’s Instructor Training program, planning, learning/teaching, and evaluation content and allows participants to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, teaching, and evaluation techniques.
